I found my first vintage champagne bucket at a resale shop in Round Top, Texas. I was shopping for our wedding because I didn’t love the one our wedding planner had on had. I paid $20 dollars. It now sits on my dining table holding champagne corks from fun events, I occasionally add flower stems, and not a single guest has failed to notice it.
“A thing of beauty is a joy forever; its loveliness increases; it will never pass into nothingness” -John Keats
Champagne buckets, silver, copper, zinc, glass or brass, were made to be beautiful. Their tapered silhouette and sturdy handles carry an inherent elegance that no purpose built vase can quite replicate. Fill one with peonies and it looks like a painting. Fill it with eucalyptus and dried berry stems and it becomes architectural. Tuck in a few corks and suddenly you have a centerpiece.
What I adore most is their imperfection. The patina. The small dents from decades of ice and celebration. Every mark on it has a story, just like we do as humans. In a world of pristine, mass-produced everything, that kind of history is something to be cherished.
If you don’t love a consignment purchase, do not fear, there are beautiful ones online new. Make today the day you purchase a family heirloom and begin years of stories. I’ve linked some of my favorite new ones and some that are a great resale. Facebook marketplace also has endless options, but you typically need to commit quickly.
